Becoming a Global Teacher

In our increasingly interconnected world, educators are breaking traditional boundaries. As globalization and technology reshapes our era, teaching expands beyond the classroom.

The year 2023 witnessed the rise of different teacher recognition and rewards organized locally and internationally by organizations such as The Varkey Foundation, The African Union, Cambridge University, and Maltina not excluding awards by state and national government, amongst others. With the African Union’s declaration of 2024 as the year of Education, we can only expect that as a government more attention will be paid to the education stakeholders and ultimately teachers who are the drivers of learning. There is no better time than now to be a teacher and beyond that get the right skills and access to relevant opportunities to grow their brand and reap the dividends education has to offer.

The fireside chat on “Becoming a Global Teacher,” delved into the concept of Becoming a Global Teacher which entails a change in perspective. “Becoming a Global Teacher” is best described as the process by which teachers acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to teach in a global context effectively. It involves adopting a mindset that embraces cultural diversity, promotes empathy and open-mindedness, and seeks to prepare students for success in an interconnected world.

The webinar was designed to help teachers see the need to infuse diverse resources and perspectives and design learning experiences that promote global awareness and understanding. Enable them to identify the right mindset, attitude, and skills for global recognition by incorporating diverse resources and perspectives, and designing learning experiences that promote global awareness and understanding. Motivate attendees to improve their craft by promoting inclusive teaching practices that celebrate diversity and create equitable learning environments. Panelists

Adeola Adefemi, a public school teacher and Fulbright fellow with a passion for quality education. Adeola is a multi-award-winning teacher, recognized for her innovative teaching methods and commitment to creating safe learning spaces. She has been honored with numerous awards such as the JCl Outstanding Young Person in Nigeria Award, Best Teacher in Lagos and Nigeria Awards and currently holds the esteemed title of the Best Teacher in Africa (African Union Continental Teachers Award) . Furthermore, in 2021, she was distinguished as one of the Top 50 Teachers in the World by the prestigious Global Teacher Prize. She is also the Maltina Teacher of the Year (2023).

Maxwell V. Kayesi, awarded the title of the most innovative teacher in Kenya for ICT Integration in Teaching and Learning. Maxwell is dedicated to revolutionizing educational content delivery. He is currently engaged at the Centre for ICT in Education and Resource Network (CiERN), providing professional development programs for educators to effectively integrate ICT into teaching practices

Event Report

The session commenced with high expectations from the participants, seeking insights on becoming global teachers and harnessing opportunities in education. Adeola shared a transformative experience where she empowered a stammering student to excel through tailored support and encouragement. She emphasized the importance of building trust and fostering inclusive learning environments where every student feels valued and heard.

Maxwell delved into the role of technology in shaping the future of education globally, highlighting its potential to enhance teaching effectiveness and student learning outcomes. Adeola further explored the incorporation of art-based activities to promote critical thinking and creativity in the classroom.
